what should a 8800gt be able to run, and is a 650W ps good enough? also whats a capable processor fgt reasonable price?8800gt good bad ugly?
A 8800Gt can run any game easily at 1280x1024 at very high settings(depending on the rest of the Pc). and a 650 watt psu is enough.8800gt good bad ugly?
I have an 88GT with a 450W and it runs it just fine. I also though dont need huge power req for the rest of the comp but 650W could run even a GTX280 as long as it is a quality PSU and has good amps on the 12v rail. At 1920x1200 i can run Oblivion on pretty much max though CoD4 might be a little rough in spots since it had trouble at 1280x1024 at max in SP.

You had trouble in Cod 4 with a 8800GT? hmm whats the rest of your pc's specs?
Old. Amd 3500 with just 1 GB of ram. It would only stutter at some parts of SP but MP is totally good and Oblivion is no problem at all. Id love to get the i7 though now lol.
You dont even need a I7=worthless right now. Heck if you have an AM2 board ''hopefully'' you could pick a X2 5000 and another 1 gb of ram and double for performance in games for under $100

single core amd 3500+ ? 8800gt is pretty much a waste in such a system. I could max out Cod4 with a 7600gt minus AA/AF.
If you have an AM2 board, just buy an AMD 5600+ and another 1GB RAM, you 'll soon be smiling. I have that CPU and its great allthough im still using my Radeon X1950 pro. Id reccomend you buy a decent cooler tho since i had issues with overheating with the stock cooler.
basically every game maxed out @1680 x 1050 except gta4 and maybe crysis (can max crysis in dx9 fine) will run gta4 fine on a mix of high and medium settings
8800gt's are excellent in terms of gaming performance for the money, but I had other issues with mine. I've had 4 of them, and all of them have had some sort of issue related either to heat, or just a faulty card. The major ongoing issue (which may have been solved wit more recent versions, as you can see in my sig I went slightly higher-end with a better cooler) that I had was overheating causing lock-ups, even in a well-ventilated case. I had 3 EVGA cards (ran sli for awhile on my old board) and 1 Zotac. The zotac was bad out of the box and died within a month, and 2 of the EVGA cards would artifact and lock-up on me. The 3rd EVGA card was a replacement for 1 of the first ones, and that was better, but I still got alot of lockups even with a small overclock. I put an aftermarket Zalman cooler on the last 8800gt I had, and that seemed to help for awhile. I think part of the issue was the fact that I was using it with an old socket 939 NF4 Asus mboard.Anyways, issues aside.. the card was great for most games. I could run Crysis at 1680x1050 at 31-32 FPS in DX9 on all HIGH settings with my old 2.6ghz athlon 64 X2.
8800GT is fairly good solid card. I've also used a 9600GT in a build for my dad. Almost identical in performance. I think mostly though the 9600GT is cheaper.Sometimes the 9600gt is better or the 8800GT either way by small amount.
