You don't have to use any security on your wireless network. Just don't complain when the neighbours start leeching your bandwidth. When Creating A Wirless Network, Is it Optional To Set The Security(WEP)

i'm been doing the same since i got a PSP but i never knew the affect it had on the owners. what happens actually?
If you have your wireless network open to the world anyone within the wireless broadcast area can ''borrow'' your bandwidth whenever they want.

IMHO it is seriously stupid to have your wireless open like that. Take some time and set up WPA2 security, and also enable MAC address filtering.
WEP keys are optional, it's just that if you don't have one up, neighboors who are close enough can get free internet, while you pay the fees.
WEP keys are nearly pointless.

WPA 2 > WPA > WEP > NOTHING

whats the diffrences?
WEP keys are the oldest form of security codes. WEP 2 is the newest and most secure.
Like the other's have said, you dont have to put it on, but it would be very easy for someone near by to use your account for their internet purposes. They (probably) won't access any of your data, but they could be downloading 24/7 off your bandwidth while you suffer a very slow connection the entire time.

Most people aren't that bad, though. Sometimes I've opened up my wireless and named it like 'free_wifi' or something... 99.9% of the time, people just use it to browse and don't really affect the bandwidth. i think most know that as soon as they fire up a torrent or something, the person running the network will notice and just lock it down.
What zip code do you live in? :P
