Wiping Vista and getting back disk space

I format my hard drive every couple of months, just to get rid of crap and keep everything running smooth. However, I've noticed the available room on my hard drive (as seen from windows) after each format has been going down. I think this is because I'm just using the format option on the Windows disk, which I recon doesn't do a hugely great job. Can anyone recommend a free HDD wiping program which will get back all of my lost volume? CheersWiping Vista and getting back disk space
Just boot from the Vista disk, when it gets to the drive selection stage click the drive and then click advanced. Then delete the partition instead of format, it makes it into a clean drive just as new.
