I wanna get back to my PC roots...Can you guys help me build a great PC?

It's been years since the last time i took Pc-gaming seriously, hence my knowledge is pretty low regarding the newer technologies available right now. Now, i wanna restart Pc gaming with pride, so I decided to build me a rig that can handle the latest games at mid-high/high settings(I'm not looking for max, but not for slideshows either!); But I've never built a gaming Rig before....
So, since most of you guys here are experts, I'd like to know what are some good enough components needed to get me back to the Hermit-Zone.I want to build one. Price range : 1200$-2500$...maybe 3000$ I need a good set of components to be able to run the games i listed down there, what would you guys recommend for :1) A good CPU? Should i settle for the Intel's i7 or Intel's..err..other choices?2) A good GPU? Should i go for ATi or Nvidia? Which version of their products can last for atleast 3 or 4 years? 3) A good RAM? DDR2 or DDR3.. i honestly don't know the difference:P4) A good Motherboard? What's the deal with these new eXpress models they're talking about? 5) A set of the Others:- An HDD.. what's SATA?- Optical Drive! No Blu-Ray though..too early for me, Dual-LayerDVDs are more affordable.
- Soundcards %26 Speakers that do they're job...- A list of wicked looking cases!! :PHere are some of the games I'd want to play without worrying about horrible framerates and a game so slow that feels like a slideshow:( I hope you guys can help a fellow former-PCgamer come back to his roots. Thanks in advance:) I wanna get back to my PC roots...Can you guys help me build a great PC?
Well first of all we need a price range, and are you building or buying pre-built (building saves you a lot of money which mean a better performing pc).I wanna get back to my PC roots...Can you guys help me build a great PC?

Ya Iv'e never built one either (ordering my first tommarow hooray!), but Iv'e helped people pick parts out for a year. So wow $2500 is a big budget I'm gonna go for the $2000- for now $2200.

Well, my friend, you've come to the right place. I, and probably a llot of other people on this site, direct you to, Newegg.com. It is the best website to learn from in my honest opinon, and the site is very ''price oriented.'' 1500-2500 is a very broad range. You can basically get all of the top-of the line stuff. The site makes it very easy to build a a system. Here you go, intel i7 $230, intel supported motherboard $150-200, gtx 260 $200 at most, case $100, psu $100, 500GB hard drive 7200 rpm $100, and that's basically it. The prices should be in that range. And that's a very good mid range system with money to spare.

I shall take the specs you have provided me with into heavy consideration. Just one quick question...Is NewEGG also available in Canada? Since that's where I am at the moment.
