my ps3 powers up, but when the main screen comes on, there is no main menu,

when i turn my ps3 on, the main screen pops up but without the main menu icons. there isn't anything but the main screen minus the scroll menu. i have an 80gb and this is the first time i have run across any difficulties. i don't know what to do, i need help, i tried to hold the power button for 5 seconds and it just goes to stand - by. so please help me, thanksmy ps3 powers up, but when the main screen comes on, there is no main menu,
have you tried calling Sony technical support? I don't think there is much the people in here can do because the PS3 is not an open system like a PC is.
