Can my system handle the 8600gt?

Hi guys I am about to upgrade my computer from an intergrated chipset, to the XFX Geforce GT with 512 mb of ddr2. My system specs are:Athlon X2 (B) 4850e 2.5 GHz (45W)Narra3-GL8E motherboard300w power supply, 5 gigs of ram. I think I might be safe but I visited the online manual and read this:'' WARNING: Do not overload the system by installing add-in cards that drawexcessive current. The system is designed to provide two amps (average) of+5 Vv power for each board/card in the computer. The total +5 Vv current draw in a fully loaded system (one with all add-in card slots filled) must notexceed the total number of slots multiplied by two amps.'' so do you think i have the amps to run it reliabily? ThanksCan my system handle the 8600gt?
You will probably be fine with your power supply with an 8600.. however, don't get that video card. Get a card with 256mb of ddr3 ram before getting one with 512mb of ddr2. DDR2 ram is not viable for gaming or most high-demand graphics apps. Please listen to my advice, it's well-informed. Can my system handle the 8600gt?
^^^ Agreed, he knows what's he is talking about. ddr2 is not very good. You might also look into an ATI 4670.
the tc might have made a typo, i didn't think the 8600gt came with ddr2 at all, although i do know there is a 512mb ddr3 version of the card. if that is the case, then yes you system could handel it.

There is a gddr2 8600gt. But go with an hd 4760 instead, its a better performance and the gddr3/512MB cards are close in price.
I'd suggest the 9600 gt over the 8600 gt. I own a 8600gt, no longer use it as i upgraded to a gtx 260. However, for your current power supply, i wouldn't push much farther than an 8600gt. However, if you were to say, consider upgrading your power supply as well, the 9600gt would be a great choice. And as far as power supply, a good 500w psu would be more than enough for your system. But, yes, the 8600gt should be ok.
yes it probably would but be carefull to put nothing else into your machine after.then again what brand is your power supply, no1 seems to have asked this but its the crucial question, if its a POS unit then it will just overload, if its something like Hiper, OCZ, Corsair, Tagan etc etc (in other words a good brand) then it will work.Although the HD4670 would be a better choice, ATI cards typically draw less power and dont generally have as much demand for amps on the 12v rails. And as the guy above me mentioned the 9600GT is far superior but is double the price and got a higher requirement so PSU upgrade is a defo, if you stick with 8600GT defo defo get the DDR3 version even if it only 256mb, ive seen a 256mb DDR3 version against a 512mb DDR2 (my m8 has both 1 in each of his machines)
I just looked at the ati 4670, and I think it might be the one to buy, but can 300 watts power it as well?
My psu is the stock one that comes with an hp machine. Sorry i cont have specifics but i just ordered it and I haven't been able to look inside, or find a spec list that names it.
my guess is it wont. my gateway psu cant run a 7600gt. its also a 300w

[/QUOTE]well thats going to be dependant on what other pices of hardware you have e.g. how many HDD's, mem stick readers etc. but i doubt you could power anything more than an 8600GT.

what were the rest of your specs before you upgraded to the 7600GT?
its pc 2 in my sig. it had onboard gpu, hdd, 2 dvd drives. i even unplugged a few things and it still didnt work.
